Emergency crews were able to knock down a large fire that “significantly damaged” a home in Whitby late Saturday night.

Whitby fire crews were called to the scene around 9:30 p.m., on Merchants Avenue, just south of Taunton Road, after the house became engulfed in flames.

No one was injured in the blaze, but according to the Whitby Fire Platoon Chief, Randy Tureski, the home sustained over $500,000 in damage.

Fire crews say they believe the fire originated in the garage.

The fire is under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal's office.

Roads were closed in the area but have since reopened.
