TORONTO -- Noel Prefontaine's 28-yard field goal on the final play of the game gave the Toronto Argonauts an exciting 39-36, home-opening win over the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday afternoon.

Prefontaine's boot capped a wild fourth quarter that saw Calgary's Larry Taylor singlehandedly bring his team back into the contest.

Calgary tied the score 36-36 on Kevin Glenn's 25-yard TD strike to Nik Lewis -- their second hookup on the afternoon. It came a play after Taylor's 64-yard punt return.

Toronto's Ricky Ray hit Dontrelle Inman with two TD strikes, including a 15-yard toss with just over three minutes remaining.

Ray's second TD pass to Inman came after Taylor stunned the sparse gathering of 20,682 spectators under an open Rogers Centre roof. He took Prefontaine's missed 36-yard field goal try 125 yards for the TD at 3:15 of the fourth. Glenn's pass to Lewis for the two-point convert made it 29-29.

Glenn was in the game because Calgary starter Drew Tate suffered a suspected dislocated left shoulder in the first quarter.

Keon Raymond's interception gave Calgary (1-1) the ball at its own 38-yard line but Toronto got it right back when former Stampeder Brandon Isaac forced Glenn to fumble, recovered it and returned it to the visitors' 10-yard line. Two Cory Boyd runs got Toronto (1-1) to the one-yard line but Juwan Simpson stopped Jarious Jackson on the third-down gamble to preserve the tie.

Tate was injured rolling out to his left to open Calgary's second possession when he put his left arm down to brace himself while being hit by Toronto's Derrick Summers.

Tate remained down for some time before walking off the field, then to the Calgary dressing room. He was replaced by the veteran Glenn, but returned to the Stampeders' sideline in the second, his left arm in a sling and ice wrapped to his left shoulder.

That really hurt a Calgary offence that looked sharp under Tate, opening the game with a 69-yard, seven play drive Tate finished with a four-yard TD strike to Rob Cote at 3:36 of the first.

Toronto boosted its lead in the third to 29-13 on Prefontaine field goals of 25 and 42 yards before Glenn found Lewis on a 20-yard TD strike at 12:57 to cut Calgary's deficit to 29-21.

Boyd scored Toronto's other touchdown. Prefontaine added the converts and finished with six field goals.

Eric Fraser had Calgary's other touchdown. Rene Paredes booted four converts.

Tate's injury and an invigorated Toronto offence -- led by Ray's 210 yards passing -- highlighted an eventful opening half the Argos led 23-14.

After Tate left, Fraser hauled in an Inman deflection and returned it 60 yards to put Calgary ahead 14-7. After Prefontaine's 14-yard field goal pulled Toronto to within 14-10, Inman made up for his miscue with a 55-yard TD grab from Ray to give the Argos a 17-14 advantage at 6:37.

Prefontaine's 40-yard boot at 11:48 boosted Toronto's lead to 20-14. It was set up by Pacino Horne's fumble recovery after Pat Wakins lost the ball following a 59-yard interception return.

Ray took Toronto on an impressive 79-yard, seven-play march that Prefontaine capped with a 27-yard field goal at 14:20 to give the Argos their nine-point half-time lead.

After watching Tate march Calgary to a TD on its opening possession, Ray took Toronto 66 yards on nine plays with Boyd running the final five yards for a touchdown at 8:49.
