Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Toronto, as a low pressure system is expected to bring "some un-Christmas-like weather" for the first few days of winter.

The alert was issued Monday, one day after the first official day of winter.

"Mother nature isn’t paying attention to the calendar," Environment Canada said in a statement. "Milder weather will settle into the region over the next few days."

Environment Canada says to expect periods of rain throughout the day Tuesday. The mild temperatures will likely persist on Christmas Eve, when the mercury is expected to climb to a high of 10 C.

For those hoping for a white Christmas, Environment Canada says "mother nature will offer a meager attempt" at coating the Greater Toronto Area with snow on Dec. 25.

The national weather agency says there's a chance of flurries on Thursday.

The current special weather statement is also in effect for a number of other regions including:

  • Halton-Peel
  • Hamilton’
  • York-Durham
  • Peterborough-Kawartha Lakes

Mild prediction follows #santabomb forecast

Monday's weather statement comes after Environment Canada predicted last week that a storm system was expected to hit the Greater Toronto Area on Christmas Day.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson previously told CTV Toronto that he expects blowing snow and poor visibility on Dec. 25. Many Twitter users had adopted the hashtag “SantaBomb” to refer to the time of the storm's arrival.

According to Environment Canada, there has been "considerable discrepancy in the weather model guidance" for this holiday period.
