TORONTO - The Education Minister's office says the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario has assured the province that students will start school on Tuesday as scheduled, even though contract negotiations continue.

The ETFO had threatened to ramp up a work-to-rule campaign that started last spring if there was no deal when classes begin a week later.

Education Minister Liz Sandals' office says discussions with the ETFO have been held all week and although a deal hasn't been reached, progress has been made with the assistance of a mediator.

Sandals' office says students will not experience a disruption to the start of the school year.

Ontario's high school teachers and its English Catholic teachers reached tentative deals last month.

Ontario's 130,000 teachers have been without contracts for a full year, and all unions -- even those with tentative agreements -- must still negotiate local contracts with their school boards.
