An elderly woman has died after she was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross Bathurst Street in North York this morning.

The collision occurred shortly after 7 a.m. on Bathurst Street, just south of Sheppard Avenue West.

Toronto Police Const. Clint Stibbe said the woman was attempting to cross the road and approached a crossing area – a cement island meant for pedestrians to get from the east to the west side -- when she was struck by a Chevrolet SUV travelling north.

Paramedics initially described her injuries as serious and rushed her to a nearby trauma centre in life-threatening condition.

She later succumbed to those injuries in hospital, Toronto police confirmed.

The age of the victim was not immediately provided.

The southbound lanes of Bathurst Street at Sheppard Avenue West and northbound Bathurst Street at York Downs Drive have been closed as police tend to the scene.

Stibbe said crews are currently performing collision reconstruction in the area and investigators have not ruled out speed as a potential factor.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is being asked to call police at 416-808-1900.
