An elderly woman has died after being struck by a dump truck in Oakville Wednesday afternoon.

It happened at Speers Road and Fourth Line at around 3 p.m.

“Halton police received a number of phone calls with regards to a pedestrian that was struck at this location,” Halton Regional Police Service Det. Ryan Snow told CTV Toronto.

The woman was crossing the road from the north to the south side when she was struck.

“Whether she got off the bus or what her destination was, we simply don't know that right now," Snow said.

Commercial motor vehicle inspectors were at the scene to determine whether any mechanical issues may have contributed to the collision.

A passerby called the incident terrible.

“But you know, it just seems to be the way on the street. I see a lot of people jaywalking and I've been here a long time, so unfortunately, it took somebody," John Waleski said.

While there was no crosswalk nearby the intersection, Snow cautioned pedestrians to always try to find one to safely cross any roadway.

"When you're looking down the road and you believe you see a vehicle coming towards you, that vehicle may end up on top of you a lot sooner than you appreciate,” he said.

“So at the end of the day, this is all about physics. When a pedestrian comes in contact with a motor vehicle, the pedestrian is generally the one that's going to sustain life-altering injuries or possibly fatal injuries."

The intersection is expected to remain closed for about another hour as police continue to investigate, Snow said.
