Police say charges against a 58-year-old driver are pending after a 74-year-old woman was fatally struck by a van Wednesday afternoon.

The woman was struck in the Victoria Park Avenue and O'Connor Drive area at approximately 4:45 p.m. She suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where she died of her injuries. A second pedestrian, a 76-year-old man, was also struck by the white GMC van. He was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the van was turning left on Victoria Park Avenue at the time of the incident. Investigators are trying to determine if the traffic light signal was green or red when the van was turning, but say regardless of whether the driver had the right of way, charges are pending.

"If the driver is there making a left, whether they have the green or red, if there is a person in the intersection, then they've got to avoid that collision," Const. Hugh Smith told CTV Toronto.

The intersection was temporarily closed as police investigated the incident.
