An elderly couple was taken to hospital after a space heater sparked a two-alarm fire in Etobicoke on Monday.

The fire started in the sunroom of the home at 22 North Heights Rd., near Kipling Avenue, at approximately 4 a.m. It spread quickly through the back of the home.

The couple that lived in the home had to be pulled from a bedroom at the back of the house, and were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

While they were brought to Etobicoke General Hospital, 45 firefighters fought the blaze and had it under control in 20 minutes.

Firefighters on scene told reporters that the damage from the fire is estimated at $150,000.
