Police in Brampton say it is only a matter of time before they track down the driver in a hit-and-run that left an 80-year-old pedestrian dead Monday morning.

Joginder Singh was pronounced dead after being struck by a vehicle while walking to a Sikh temple only blocks from his home.

Peel Regional Police said they had received footage from the temple’s video surveillance equipment, which they believe captured images of the vehicle involved in the crash.

“The person who has done this, we would like them to seek out some representation and turn themselves in to police,” Const. Thomas Ruttan told CTV Toronto.

Singh was discovered laying on the street on Timberlane Drive, north of Highway 407 near McLaughlin Road, at about 4 a.m.

Family and neighbours told CTV Toronto that Singh was a friendly man who was well-liked in his community and walked to a nearby temple to pray every morning.

“He cared about what you thought,” said Karanbir Dhaliwal, Singh’s grandson. “He always came to me and asked me how I was doing. He used to ask me how my school was going. He just wanted to be my friend. That is how he was.”

Peel Regional Police said the vehicle who struck the man did not remain at the scene after the collision.

Debris at the scene suggests Singh was struck by a black vehicle, but the make and model remain unknown.

Police are searching for that vehicle, which they said has its front left wheel torn off, as well as damage to its front bumper and possibly the windshield.

Peel police issued a release Monday afternoon, asking body shops, wreckers or mechanics to look out for a vehicle that comes in with similar damage, and to call the Major Collision Bureau immediately.

Police are also appealing to anyone who either witnessed the collision, or has seen a vehicle with similar damage in the area, to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call Peel Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477.
