Police are searching for a driver who left the scene after a man in his 30s was fatally struck by a vehicle on the side of the road in Brampton.

The incident occurred in the area of Steeles and Finch Avenues at approximately 6 a.m. on Thursday.

Peel Regional Police said they were called to the scene when passing motorists found the man's body on the side of Steeles. They said it appeared that the man had been riding a black mountain bike when he was fatally struck by a vehicle.

He was wearing dark clothing as cycled along the 80 km/h road, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and later identified by family members as 30-year-old Hardeep Pahra.

Pahra was a father of two young children, and was biking home from work at the time of the crash, relatives said.

Few details have been released, but Const. Lilly Fitzpatrick said whoever hit the man had not remained on scene. Any witnesses are asked to contact police at 905-453-2121, ext. 3710, or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Officers have yet to release descriptions of the suspect or vehicle.
