A man and a woman were shot early Thursday morning in the parking lot of a North York apartment building, Toronto police say.

Police said the 31-year-old man was sitting in the car, parked behind a building in the area of Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue, at the time of the shooting. The 30-year-old woman was standing outside the car at the time.

At least one person approached and fired multiple shots through the driver's side window at approximately 12:45 a.m. Both the man and the woman were injured. The woman ran into the building, but police said they did not know whether she lived there or was seeking shelter.

The man drove the car out of the parking lot, then came to a stop in the intersection of Bathurst and York Downs Drive. The man was met in the intersection by paramedics, who said he had seven gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital in serious condition.

The woman received a gunshot wound in the arm, and was transported in non-life-threatening condition.

Police have not provided any suspect information so far, but told reporters on scene that a black car was seen leaving the area at the time.
