A Dollarama store in downtown Toronto has introduced a no-large-groups shopping policy during peak hours after a number of "incidents" involving their customers, which include students from nearby high schools.

The store -- which is located in the Annex neighbourhood, near Bloor Street West and Bathurst Street -- has hired security guards to help enforce their recently introduced policy.

Dollarama spokesperson Lyla Radmanovich says the store does not allow large groups of shoppers to enter the building during the lunchtime and late afternoon hours after a number of "incidents."

She would not comment on what happened during those incidents, but said the policy ensures the safety of the employees and shoppers.

"The practice at the store is to control the flow of traffic at peak hours," she told CTVNews.ca in a telephone interview Thursday afternoon. "(The policy) helps employees supervise people in the store better."

Asked how many people would be allowed per group, Radmanovich said "one or two," depending on the behaviour of the shoppers.

The Dollarama store is located near a number of schools, including Central Technical School, West End Alternative School and Palmerston Avenue Junior Public School.

Radmanovich said the policy does not specifically target students, but she admitted that they used to frequently come to the store in large groups.

She said the reactions from neighbouring businesses to their store’s new policy have largely been positive.
