After making bail and hiring a public relations firm, two Ontario doctors charged with drugging a woman and sexually assaulting her, spoke out for the first time, proclaiming their innocence.

Dr. Amitabh Chauhan and Dr. Suganthan Kayilasanathan, both 32, have been accused of gang sexual assault, as well as administering a noxious substance.

They spoke to reporters on the steps of the Old City Hall courthouse Wednesday night after being released on $100,000 bail.

"We are most definitely shocked by these allegations and fully intend on defending (ourselves) very vigorously through the court process," Kayilasanathan said.

The pair have been friends since childhood. Kayilasanathan works as a family physician at a clinic on Markham Road, while Chauhan works in the plastic surgery department at Hamilton's McMaster University and is a naval reservist with the Canadian Forces.

Chauhan holds the rank of acting sub-lieutenant. The Department of National Defence is not commenting on the case while it is before the courts.

"Despite everything that has happened to over the past few days, I still have faith in our justice system and very importantly, I want to say, I've been going through a lot over the past few days, and more importantly, my family has been going through quite a bit," Chauhan said.

The pair asked the media to leave their families alone.

The doctors have hired Navigator PR, the same public relations firm that represented former Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant when he was facing charges following a fatal traffic accident with a bike courier.

On Wednesday, Toronto police said they were investigating the doctors further, saying two other women have come forward with allegations.

"There is a thread of similarity," Det. Dan Luff told reporters. But he did not specify any details.

Defence lawyer David Humphrey said it was the first he had heard of it.

"I am puzzled by that, if the police have evidence of further offences and it's credible evidence I would have expected them to either lay more charges or at least make the court aware," he said.

Lawyers for the pair made a brief court appearance Thursday to set a future court date. The doctors will be back in court on March 14.
