A male cyclist, 38, has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Markham.

Police in York Region confirmed that the cyclist was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital where he received stitches for a head injury.

York Region police say the injury is non-life threatening.

The cyclist was struck from behind and thrown off his bike near the intersection of Markham Road and 16th Avenue Saturday afternoon. The accident occurred at around 3:30 p.m.

Buses were being diverted from the intersection as officers continued their investigation. A section of Markham Road was also closed down after the collision.

No charges have been laid.
