A male cyclist is in serious condition in hospital after he was struck by a car in Toronto’s east end Wednesday morning, police say.

The collision occurred on Kennedy Road at Kingsdown Drive/Stratton Avenue, north of Eglinton Avenue East, at about 5:50 a.m.

Police said the 42-year-old cyclist was crossing Kennedy when he was struck by a southbound Honda Civic.

The car's windshield was shattered on the passenger side, and the cyclist was thrown several metres.

After hitting the cyclist, the driver turned around and returned to the scene, where he waited for police, said traffic services Const. Hugh Smith.

The cyclist was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital for emergency treatment.

Kennedy Road is closed north of Eglinton Avenue East for an investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information about the collision to call traffic services at 416-808-1900.
