A former Toronto Argos cheerleader has been transported back to the city about two weeks after she sustained severe head injuries while vacationing in Croatia.

Anna Leibenko entered the critical care unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Saturday morning, a hospital official told CTVToronto.ca.

The 24-year-old has been in an induced coma since late August when she fell three-metres off a catamaran and hit her head while travelling with friends in Split, Croatia.

Leibenko did not purchase travel insurance, leaving her family to cover the cost of her overseas medical bills and an air ambulance back to Canada.

Her brother Artem told CP24 that Leibenko’s air ambulance arrived in Toronto at 6:30 a.m.

Artem said Leibenko, who was accompanied by her mother, remains in a coma.

A fundraising website set up by Leibenko’s brother indicated that USD$93,550 was needed to secure an air ambulance. Her Croatian hospital bills were adding up to several thousand dollars each day, a friend of Leibenko’s told CTV Toronto in late August.

More than $142,140 has been raised to date, according to a figure posted on the website.
