Police are investigating after a section of concrete fell from a 14-storey building bordering Yonge-Dundas Square.

Officers said the concrete fell from the building at 21 Dundas Sq., and was reported at 6:35 a.m. Inspectors have been called in to examine the 15-storey building.

Officials on scene have not confirmed which part of the building concrete fell from, but said it may have come from the roof which is under construction. A police officer on scene told reporters he believed there was a concrete tile missing from the renovated section of the roof, and that the pieces on the ground were similar to the stones used to tile the rooftop.

It is not clear how the concrete fell, but police said they're investigating the possibility of criminal mischief. Officers said they believe a suspect or suspects may have accessed the roof through an adjacent building under construction, then thrown a tile from the roof. Police are canvassing the area for witnesses and security camera footage.

The tower one of two skyscrapers known as the Hermant Buildings, and was designed in 1929 by Toronto's first practising Jewish architect Benjamin Brown. Both towers are designated heritage buildings under the Ontario Heritage Act.
