Organizers said the Canadian National Exhibition closed early on Tuesday when the size of the crowd prompted safety concerns.

Tuesday was Youth Day at the CNE, and anyone under 19 years old was admitted to the fair for free. Organizers said the success of the event led to its early closure.

A statement on the CNE website said staff were concerned about safety due to crowding, since so many youth showed up to the event. The midway was closed an hour early, at 11 p.m., as a result.

"After a positive response to today's Youth Day, CNE organizers are winding down operations slightly earlier than usual," a statement on the CNE website said.

"This action is not due to any particular threat or incident, but simply to ensure the safety of our guests and to facilitate the exit or a large number of people. Safety is the number one priority at the CNE."

Toronto police officers who had been at The Ex on Tuesday evening said the crowds were large, and there was a general safety concern for the public.

They said there had been a minor disturbance at some point during the day, but did not provide further details.
