A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a weekend incident that saw police firing shots at a fleeing vehicle in the Jane Street and Trethewey Drive area.

The suspect was arrested without incident at his home in Vaughan overnight Monday.

Speaking to reporters outside the residence at 119 Capera Dr., Sgt. Mark Hayward said police identified the man and traced him to a home in the Rutherford Road and Weston Road area.

"We were able to confirm the suspect we were looking for was in residence here," Hayward said. "Some phone calls were made and the male exited the residence and surrendered himself to officers from TAVIS (the Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy squad)."

Police had been hunting for the man since shortly before midnight on Sunday, when he sped away from a gas station, striking two officers.

The car was spotted a short time later, but when police attempted to stop it, another officer was struck.

Police fired shots at the vehicle, but the driver escaped and lost the police on Highway 401.

Hayward said the officers who were struck by the suspect’s car suffered minor injuries, described as "glancing blows."

One officer was taken to hospital, treated for minor injuries and released. They are all back on the job as of Tuesday.

Basman Elias, 36, of Toronto faces 11 charges, including:

  • aggravated assault
  • assault with a weapon (three counts)
  • assaulting a police officer (three counts)
  • dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • failure to stop for police
  • failure to stop at the scene of an accident (two counts)

He was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
