One man is dead and four others are injured after a high-speed car crash on Highway 401 near Port Union Road.

Police are investigating a collision between a Mazda 6 and a GMC Envoy SUV that closed the eastbound collector lanes shortly after noon on Saturday.

Police say the Mazda lost control during a lane manoeuvre and collided with the SUV, causing the SUV to hit a cement barrier and roll over into an eastbound express lane.

The male driver of the SUV died at the scene.

A female passenger was transported to Sunnybrook Hospital with life-threatening injuries and three children from the SUV were all taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The female passenger is now stable but is in critical condition, according to officials. The names of those in the SUV have not yet been released.

Alicia Anandjit, 22, of Pickering, Ont., sustained minor injuries in the Mazda during the collision. She has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and bodily harm.

Police are asking anyone with further information to contact the Toronto division of the Ontario Provincial Police at 416-235-4981.
