Police have arrested a male suspect in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 12-year-old boy at a downtown Toronto hotel.

The boy, who has not been identified, was staying at the Cambridge Suites Hotel, located on Richmond Street East near Victoria Street, with his family. Police were called to the hotel shortly before 6 a.m. on Wednesday.

"Attending officers found a 12-year-old boy suffering from physical trauma," Det. Omar Khan told reporters at a news conference Wednesday afternoon. "On scene, police arrested a male. This incident involves family members who were guests at the hotel."

Khan didn't reveal the relationship between the suspect and the boy. Police say he was stabbed in the neck and was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He died of his injuries a short time later.

Khan said because of the age of the boy, police have released "very limited information" on what led to the stabbing. However he said the incident was a result of a "family situation" and police believe there's "no immediate threat to public safety."

He said charges haven't been laid and the investigation is ongoing.
