BARRIE, Ont. - The Special Investigations Unit has released the name of a 48-year-old man shot and killed by police in Barrie, Ont.

Donald Melton was shot Monday after a confrontation in which two rookie police constables were stabbed in the neck.

Clayton Speers and Dave Edgar -- both in their 20s and Barrie natives -- remain in hospital.

Their chief, Wayne Frechette, has said both officers are resting comfortably and were expected to be OK.

The SIU says its investigation is continuing and is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to call the unit.
