The Toronto Board of Health is suggesting a ban on the sale of energy drinks in conjunction with alcohol at events.

The ban is part of a proposed amendment to the Municipal Alcohol Policy that aims to reduce the health risks posed by the consumption of alcohol.

The amendment also suggests that energy drinks should not be sold with alcohol in effort to prevent excessive drinking.

"When consuming energy drinks mixed with alcohol, persons may have a false sense of alertness due to the effect of caffeine. As a result, they may over-consume alcohol and injure themselves or others," the proposal says.

The TBH is also suggesting that the law be amended to require that cold water be offered for free at events.

The proposed amendments would apply to any event where a liquor permit is required, including wedding receptions, street parties and festivals like Ribfest.

The proposal will be presented at a meeting on Aug. 18.
