An 11-year-old boy who suffered severe burns was among the seven people rushed to hospital Tuesday morning after a two-alarm fire at an Etobicoke apartment.

Toronto police responded to a call for an apartment unit "in flames" at 230 Lake Promenade, in the Waterfront Trail and Long Branch Avenue area, just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, said Const. Victor Kwong.

Toronto Const. Zoran Ivkovic -- an officer who was on scene before fire crews arrived -- managed to rescue the children from the burning unit.

The 11-year-old boy was taken to hospital with severe burns. Two other children and four adults -- including Ivkovic -- were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Kwong said the fire was contained to a single apartment unit and residents of the building have since been allowed to return. He added that a family pet was also taken to a local animal shelter

In a tweet Tuesday afternoon, Toronto Police thanked Ivkovic and the other officers on scene for their heroic efforts.
