A Toronto woman who was stabbed to death alongside her mother in Atlantic City, N.J., was a member of the Toronto Chinese Orchestra.

Alice Mei See Leung, 47, played the yangqin, a traditional Chinese string instrument and she joined the group 10 years ago.

The orchestra is made up of both amateur and professional musicians and is the oldest Chinese orchestra in Canada. The group performs across the province in an effort to build an appreciation for Chinese orchestral music.

Leung, 47, and her mother Po Lin Wan, 80, were killed on the sidewalk outside Bally's Casino Monday.

Leung and her mother were in the city for a gambling holiday, where they were the victims of a botched robbery attempt, said authorities.

Police said a female suspect stabbed the pair multiple times with a 30-centimetre butcher knife around 10 a.m. on Monday.

Police report the suspect was trying to take money from the women.

The two were taken to hospital, but died of their injuries.

The woman accused of the crime, Antoinette Pelzer, was originally charged with robbery. Pelzer appeared in a U.S. court Tuesday where she was charged with murder. Her bail has been set at $1.5 million.

Pelzer's mother said her daughter has schizophrenia and may have been off her medications.
