A massive fire that destroyed a townhouse construction in Ajax is being investigated, Durham Regional Police said on Tuesday.

Firefighters were called to battle the major fire near Rossland Road East and Salem Road North east of Toronto shortly before 10 p.m. Monday, working for more than an hour as several townhouses under construction went up in flames.

Durham police said the construction project was almost done; the damaged homes had already been framed and shingled, and windows had already been installed.

There was no damage estimate available, but police said it was substantial.

Durham Regional Police and the fire marshal are investigating the cause of the blaze.

A spokesperson with the Fire Marshall's office said no one was living in the townhouses at the time and the electricity had been shut off, adding that they could be looking at a case of arson.
