Police have charged a 24-year-old Toronto man with murder following the fatal shooting of a man and woman in an LCBO parking lot in Scarborough over the weekend.

Joseph Anzolona, 26, and Cynthia Mullapudi, 24, were shot and killed in the Wexford-Maryvale neighbourhood  near Victoria Park Avenue and Ellesmere Road at around 10 p.m. on Friday.

According to police, a man was getting into the back seat of an SUV after making a purchase at an LCBO when a lone gunman opened the rear door of the vehicle and fired numerous rounds into the back seat.

Police said the gunshots struck the man and woman numerous times. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man succumbed to his injuries in hospital a short time later.

A separate man and woman who were in a front seat of the SUV at the time were not injured in the shooting.

At a news conference on Monday, Staff Insp. Greg McLane told reporters that through a joint investigation by the Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force and the Toronto Homicide Squad, a suspect was arrested in connection with the shooting on Sunday.

McLane attributed the “successful conclusion at such an early stage” to public’s assistance and cooperation with the investigation.

“Since we have been making strong appeals to the public for violent crime, the level of cooperation has increased both directly and through Crime Stoppers,” McLane said. “I’ve noticed a significant increase coming into Crime Stoppers from my investigators.”

McLane did not release any information regarding a potential motive for the shooting but said it was “more likely” that the male victim was the intended target.

The male victim and the suspect were known to police.

The suspect, McLane alleges, is also a known gang member.

“They operate everywhere – gang members in this day in age are very mobile and very active throughout the whole GTA and other cities,” McLane added. “Gang investigations have taken us to all points across Canada.”

Harris Nnane, 24, of Toronto was arrested on Sunday, May 1 at around 7:30 p.m. and charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

He was scheduled to appear in court at 1911 Eglinton Avenue East on Monday at 10 a.m.

None of the allegations have been proven in court.

“Our concern when we see an escalation in gun violence like this is that often times it ends up in a homicide investigation,” McLane said Monday. “Yes, there are a lot of street gangs out there. It’s clear to me that they’re oblivious to being stopped by police. They do not seem too concerned about carrying their guns. That’s a great concern.”

“Guns are a problem and it’s going to be a bigger problem, so we’re doing what we can.”

Police are appealing to the public for video, still photographs or security footage from the area that evening and ask anyone with information to contact investigators at 416-808-4100 or Crime Stoppers at (416) 222-TIPS (8477).
