TORONTO -

Representatives of families whose adoptions are in limbo after an Ontario-licensed agency went bankrupt met Tuesday afternoon with Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services Minister Deb Matthews.

Kids Link International Adoption Agency -- which operated as Imagine Adoption based in Cambridge, Ont. -- posted a bankruptcy notice on its website on July 13.

About 400 families across Canada have paid thousands of dollars to adopt children from Ethiopia, Ecuador, Zambia and Ghana.

The families want Matthews and her ministry to help them complete the adoption process.

The families were expected to present Matthews with a petition with almost 8,000 signatures on it, supporting their position.

David Cotter with the families group says it was clear Matthews understands the gravity of the situation, adding she committed to helping the group work with the bankruptcy trustee to complete the adoptions.

The first meeting of creditors of Imagine Adoption is set for Thursday in Kitchener, Ont., with the bankruptcy trustee BDO Dunwoody.
