A 48-year-old airport employee is dead after being involved in an accident Thursday night at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, according to reports.

Police told CP24 they received a call at 8:42 p.m. on Thursday about an industrial accident at Pearson's Terminal 1.

A spokesman for Greater Toronto Airport Authority confirmed that there was a call for medical assistance to the aircraft parking area shortly before 9 p.m.

A Swissport employee was airlifted to hospital, the GTAA spokesman said. Police report that the employee was hit by a belt loader.

The man was in critical condition with chest injuries when he was transported to St. Michael's Hospital in downtown Toronto. According to reports, the man has been pronounced dead.

The Ministry of Labour is investigating.
