Police are offering a $50,000 reward, hoping to encourage eyewitnesses of a fatal Regent Park shooting to come forward and identify a suspect.

Officers announced the reward on the one-year anniversary of the shooting, during a 10:30 a.m. news conference on Tuesday.

"We are still looking for several eyewitnesses who left the area of the shooting and refused to make themselves known to police," Toronto Police Det. Sgt. Tam Bui said Tuesday.

The shooting occurred in the area of Shuter and Trefann Streets on the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 6, 2014. Police were called to the area when witnesses reported the sound of gunshots.

When officers arrived, they found a young man who appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds. The man was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

He was later identified as 18-year-old Yusuf Ali. A family member described Ali as a "very good boy" at the news conference on Tuesday

"He had a future ahead of him," the woman told reporters. "It's really hurtful."

After a year of investigation, Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders approved the $50,000 reward, hoping the money will be enough to encourage the witnesses to come forward.

In addition to the reward, police called the news conference to provide the public with new details about what is said to have happened that afternoon.

Witnesses told police that Ali had been followed for several blocks before the shooting. He was then "blitzed from behind" by a man wearing a mask and a hood, Bui said Tuesday. There were several people in the area who they hope will come forward with key information.

The suspect was described Tuesday as a man in his 20s, who is more than six feet tall and has a lean build.

"A number of investigative leads have been followed up on without any results," Bui said.

"I believe he was dropped off on Parliament Street by a newer model silver car, by an unknown driver," Bui said.

"We are looking for any information that might assist us in identifying the vehicle or driver, or the individual who we believe shot and killed Yusuf Ali on that day."

Anyone with more information is asked to contact police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-8477 (TIPS).
