It was an August day in 2010 when the 42-year-old Sonia Varaschin didn’t show up for work. Her disappearance sparked a massive search, which ended six days later when police found Varaschin’s body.

Ontario Provincial Police are still searching for the person who killed Varaschin and left her body in a wooded area just off Beechgrove Sideroad, east of Caledon.

Shortly after police began searching for Varaschin, they found her blood-stained Toyota Carolla abandoned a short distance away. There was also blood inside Varaschin’s home.

In the last five years, police say they have been able to determine a number of key facts about the person who murdered Varaschin. However, they have been unsuccessful so far in identifying the killer, believed to be a male.

Police say they have a sample of the killer’s DNA, boot size, and style of boot he was wearing on the night of the murder. They have also checked the killer’s DNA against 600 different men, but to no avail.

Police say they have also received over 1,200 tips from the public.

Speaking to reporters last week, police said they are confident that someone has information that could lead to an arrest in Varaschin’s murder.

“If you have any information, no matter how big or small you may feel it seems, it could be the piece of the puzzle that turns the corner with respect to this investigation,” Police Sgt. Peter Leon said.

A $50,000 reward is still being offered by police for anyone who comes forward with information that leads to an arrest or conviction.
