Two Niagara Regional Police officers who were shot during an armed standoff near Welland, Ont. on Saturday have been released from hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.

Police were responding to calls about an armed man inside a building at 704 Canboro Road in Pelham, located west of Welland, at approximately 8 p.m. on Saturday when two officers were shot. 

According to police. while the officers were inside the apartment building a man exited his room and opened fire. 

Police say one officer was shot three times and a second officer was shot in the foot. Both were rushed to hospital in Hamilton. 

The officer who was shot in the foot underwent surgery late Saturday night. 

Both officers were released on Sunday and are expected to make a full recovery, according to Niagara police. 

The two officers that were shot have been identified as Cst. Neal Ridley and Cst. Jake Braun. Both men were said to be recovering at home on Sunday afternoon. 

Ridley has been an officer with Niagara Regional Police for eight years, while Braun is a five-year member of the service. 

Niagara Regional Police Chief Jeff McGuire said on Sunday that he met with the officers and their families. 

"I am incredibly proud of the courage and professionalism of these officers as well as everyone else who had a part to play in the event and the follow up,” Chief McGuire said. 

Police said at some point during the standoff on Saturday, a suspect was taken into custody.

The Special Investigations Unit, which has been called in to investigate, said in a statement that the man located by police officers also suffered gunshot wounds in the incident, and was also taken to hospital. 

The SIU is called in whenever a person is injured or killed during a police-related incident.
