Two people were rushed to hospital without vital signs following a fire at a building in Scarborough Tuesday night.

The call for the fire at the residential highrise located on Lawrence Avenue East, near Orton Park Road, came in at around 7:30 p.m. and was upgraded to a two-alarm fire a short time later, Toronto Fire Services said.

Speaking with CP24 at the scene, one resident said he felt lucky he and his family were able to make it out of the building.

“I started hearing screams in the hallway and I opened the door very carefully and realized it is on our floor,” resident Stevan Milojevic said.

“The whole floor was engulfed in dark smoke, and people were screaming and running towards the stairwell. Our neighbour told us ‘get out - if you don’t, you’re finished,’” he said.

A man and a woman, both believed to be in their 60s, were transported to hospital without vital signs. The man has since been revived, EMS said.

EMS said initial reports that a third patient was being treated at the scene were erroneous and the result of confusion.

TTC buses are currently being used to shelter residents at the scene.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office will be investigating, Toronto Fire Services said.
