Two cousins were killed when their snowmobile swerved into a tree on a trail near Bracebridge, Ont. late Saturday morning.

The incident occurred before 11:30 a.m. on a path off of Goltz Road near Lake Muskoka, according to Ontario Provincial Police.

OPP identified the victims as Woodbridge, Ont. cousins Rino Mazzuca and Antonio Mazzuca, both 51.

OPP say the cousins were riding together on the snowmobile, along with two other people who were trailing behind them, when they crashed into a tree.

One of the victims was pronounced dead on the scene. The other man was rushed to a nearby hospital with severe injuries and died later in the afternoon.

The crash drew a large response from emergency crews, but only police officers on snowmobiles could access the scene about a kilometre from the closest road.

A portion of the trail was shut down and other snowmobilers were forced to turn around.

"It's terribly sad. It's too bad it happened - it's a beautiful day with lots of sun," Dave Schwartz, a snowmobiler from Cookstown, Ont., told CTV Barrie. "But you just really got to watch the signs out there."

Investigators are trying to determine whether speed was a factor.

"We've utilized our traffic technical team and our reconstruction officers. They'll look at everything from track marks to speed," said OPP Const. Jim Reading.

Police will also be interviewing the other two people who were on the trail with the victims.
